England's hopes for success in the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament may have found a secret weapon in the form of Chelsea FC left-back, Ben Chilwell. Despite an injury-riddled season at Stamford Bridge, Chilwell is optimistic about his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad and contributing to their potential victory.

Chilwell believes that the strong camaraderie among Southgate’s England players could be a significant factor propelling them towards glory in Germany this summer. He has expressed immense satisfaction with his time spent in the Three Lions camp, asserting that absence only strengthens their bond and minimizes any impact when they reunite at St George’s Park.

The recent friendlies against Brazil and Belgium marked England’s first two internationals since November. These matches saw stars like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, along with other Premier League luminaries, flocking to St George's Park - further solidifying this brotherly bond.

England more experienced side now

Chilwell also suggests that previous disappointments from major tournaments can serve as motivation for the team to push even further this summer. With 21 caps earned since his international debut six years ago, he brings both experience and determination into play.

Chelsea player, Ben Chilwell, said:

“We’re so close and such a good group, whether it’s been three or four months since we last saw each other, we come together and the first day it’s like we’ve never been apart.
“We really enjoy it, and look forward to seeing each other and catching up on life and this time is no different. It’s always very special to pull on an England shirt and represent your country. From the first time you do it to the last time, it’s a special feeling and something that we all love doing. It’s a very proud feeling to be able to do that - a lot of emotions and we all look forward to it.”
“I think this group of players, what was a very young group then is more experienced now after a few tournaments since. We’ve got good experience that we can use to fuel us, motivate us and push us to go one step further this summer.”

Chilwell looking to follow legendary footsteps

Since Ashley Cole retired from international football back in 2014, several left-backs have worn the Three Lions jersey. Cole had an illustrious career spanning over thirteen years during which he earned 107 caps for England. As a current Chelsea player occupying the same position as Cole once did, Chilwell is keen on drawing inspiration from him and following in his decorated footsteps.

Ben Chilwell added:

“Of course, in terms of my position it was Ashley Cole who inspired me and I looked up to. Ashley got over 100 caps – he was an unbelievable player, very consistent, and if I can try and have a career anywhere near as good as his I’ll be very happy.
“Fortunately, when I joined Chelsea I got to meet him and pick his brains a little bit. I’ve just tried to idolise those sorts of players I’ve grown up watching, play the way I want to play but also try and listen and take their advice as much as possible as well.”

Despite being an unused substitute during Chelsea's recent win against Brighton under Mauricio Pochettino's leadership, Chilwell appears to be on track for inclusion in Southgate’s provisional Germany-bound squad for Euro matches, which will be announced next week.
