Bayern Munich vs Manchester City Match Preview

Published: Updated: 06:31, 24 Jul 2023

The Japan National Stadium is the venue for Wednesday’s club friendly between German champions Bayern Munich and English champions Manchester City.

Key Takeaways
  • Bayern Munich clinched an 11th successive Bundesliga title last season
  • Manchester City have won five of the last six Premier League titles, including each of the previous three
  • Bayern thrashed amateur side Rottach-Egern 27-0 in their first pre-season friendly

Fans in Tokyo will be treated to a spectacle of world-class football when two giants of the European game lock horns in the Japanese capital. Having dominated their respective leagues in recent years, Bayern and Man City look set to put on a show at the National Stadium.

Bayern Munich Form

Bayern Munich kicked off their pre-season preparations with a 27-0 (yes, 27-0!) thrashing of non-league outfit Rottach-Egern last Tuesday. 13 different players found the back of the net in the rout, while Jamal Musiala, Mathys Tel and Marcel Sabitzer each scored five goals.

It goes without saying that Bayern will find life a bit more difficult when they do battle with Manchester City, but Thomas Tuchel’s men will be determined to continue their winning run ahead of another jam-packed season.

The Bavarians retained the Bundesliga crown in dramatic fashion last term, scoring an 89th-minute winner against FC Koln on the final day of the campaign to edge out Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. In 2023-24, the perennial German champions will go in search of a 12 consecutive title.

Manchester City Form

Manchester City came from 2-0 down to defeat Yokohama F. Marinos 5-3 in their first pre-season friendly, with goal-machine Erling Haaland coming off the bench at half-time to bag a brace on Sunday.

Six weeks ago, Pep Guardiola’s side capped a memorable 2022-23 campaign by defeating Inter Milan 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League final to secure the treble, having also won the Premier League title and the FA Cup.

The Cityzens enjoyed a mammoth 25-game unbeaten streak in all competitions between February and May, with a solitary defeat coming in their final 28 outings last term. Naturally, the Premier League giants will be eager to pick up where they left off.

Head-to-Head

Manchester City knocked Bayern Munich out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals last season, notching a 4-1 aggregate win. Following a 3-0 victory for Guardiola’s team in the first leg, the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the second leg.

Since 2011, Bayern and City have faced each other eight times in the Champions League. Both clubs enjoyed three wins across the first six meetings before the Cityzens bucked that trend last season.

Team News

Bayern Munich are still waiting for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to return to full fitness after the veteran stopper fractured the tibia and fibula in his right leg in a skiing accident, forcing him to miss the second half of the previous campaign.

Lucas Hernandez and Daley Blind have left the German giants this summer, but Tuchel has brought in Kim Man-jae from Napoli, Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig and Raphael Guerreiro from Borussia Dortmund.

As for Man City, Kevin De Bruyne remains sidelined after sustaining a muscle injury in the Champions League final triumph over Inter. In terms of transfers, influential midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has joined Barcelona, with Mateo Kovacic arriving from Chelsea.

Key Players

Bayern boast a wide array of dangerous attackers, including Serge Gnabry, who finished the previous campaign with 17 goals and 12 assists. Jamal Musiala bagged 16 goals and 16 assists last season, while Leroy Sane notched 14 goals and 10 assists.

Like Bayern, Man City’s squad is littered with world-class stars. However, there is no denying that Erling Haaland is City’s key player. The “Striking Viking” netted a whopping 52 goals in 53 matches across all competitions last term, including a record-breaking 36 goals in 35 Premier League appearances.

Final Thoughts

Given the abundance of clinical forwards on both sides, Wednesday’s showdown looks destined to be an eventful encounter. Yes, this is a pre-season friendly, but these prestigious clubs invariably give everything to taste victory.
