Southampton are facing their final few days in the top flight of English football. A disappointing season has meant that they become the first casualty of the year. Brighton & Hove Albion however, Southampton’s closest Premier League neighbours, have their eyes on a loftier prize: European qualification.
With the implementation of the European Conference League, more European places are up for grabs across the UEFA nations, Brighton will be pushing for a chance in the more prestigious Europa League however, and will be hoping to take three points of the out-of-form and destitute Southampton. With relegation from the Premier League looming, Southampton have pride to play for, the commitment of their fans has been unwavering over their stint in the top division and the players will hopefully feel that they owe them at the very least, an exciting send-off.
Southampton’s recent form portrays them as a relegated side, their last win came way back on the 4th of March against 19th-placed Leicester with a one-nil home victory. They have scraped draws against some of the big boys though: double three-all draws home and away at Spurs and Arsenal in the past two months, but they have only managed one draw in their last five games. Brighton are having a late-season renaissance, and after recovering with a remarkable 3-0 win over high-flying Arsenal after getting pasted by relegation candidates Everton, they are charging down a record-high finish in the Premier League and will be itching to get back to winning ways after a startling defeat at Newcastle earlier this week.
This will be a Brighton side that will be depleted with the absence of several players but may in fact see some key ones returning. As of yet, the return of Adam Lallana is up in the air as he is in contention to recover from a thigh injury. We may also see the return of regular defender Joel Veltman, who will be a big addition to the squad having missed the previous four games. Amongst the back line, Brighton will definitely be without Adam Webster and we won’t be seeing Polish prospect Jakub Moder in the midfield this season and long-time servant Solly March will also be absent. Other notable absentees include the explosive Tariq Lamptey and promising winger Jeremy Sarmiento, as well as rotational goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Southampton also have a side riddled with injuries and will have to rotate, although we could see the return of the recently absent Che Adams to the forward line as he races to recover in time. Romain Perraud will be out until at least pre-season as he recovers from a recent surgery. Armel Bella-Kotchap will also be absent, but Valentino Livramento may return as he has been back in training with the squad. Saints fans will most likely have to wait until the new season begins before they see either Mohamed Salisu or Juan Larios return to action, however.

Expert Insight: This could be a closer game than people realise although Southampton are already relegated, the prospect of a local derby could spur them on and Brighton’s form has been very patchy of late, both conceding and scoring plenty of goals. This could be a relatively high scoreline.
