Cameroon vs Comoros Prediction

Published: Updated: 14:37, 24 Jan 2022
Prediction: 3-1
Tip: Both Teams to Score | Vincent Aboubakar to score anytime

Key Points:

1. Cameroon won two and drew one to top their AFCON group in style
2. Cameroon conceded one goal in each of their three AFCON group games
3. Vincent Aboubakar is the tournament's top scorer with 3 goals from 5 matches

Holders and favourites Cameroon look to move into the quarter finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations but first they'll have to get past tournament surprise package Comoros. After an impressive group stage performance, the Indomitable Lions are 10/3 favourites to lift the trophy on home soil, while ultimate underdogs Comoros are the 500-1 outsiders. Nonetheless, the island nation mustn't be counted completely after overachieving on their AFCON debut so far. The winner of tonight's clash will go on to the last eight to face the winner of the earlier kick-off between Guinea and Gambia.

It's difficult to predict anything but a Cameroon win here. The hosts stormed through the group stage, topping their group with two wins and a draw. With several quality familiar faces in their side and the home crowd cheering them on, it would be the shock of the century to see them turned over by one of the minnows of the tournament.

To make things even more bleak for Comoros, not only will they be playing a far superior opponent on paper and in front of a partisan crowd, but they'll do it without a recognised goalkeeper. A Covid-19 and injury crisis has crippled their squad with perhaps the worst repercussion meaning the absence of their coach and all of their available goalkeepers. Spokespeople for the team have indicated that they plan to play an outfield player between the sticks and essentially get on with it.

With that in mind, we thoroughly expect Cameroon to score a few goals, as they did when they put four past other minnows Ethiopia. There won't be a great deal of value in goals scored for the hosts with everyone predicting at least three but in reality the number could end up being a cricket score. However, one thing to note is that Cameroon have managed to concede one goal in all three of their group games before this. That includes one goal shipped to Ethiopia in that 4-1 win, a nation ranked 137th in the world and actually five places lower than Comoros. If Ethiopia can get on the scoresheet, then so can Comoros, and there is definitely value in that.

That's why we're predicting both teams to score in a comfortable win for Cameroon, potentially a 3-1 scoreline. We also expect tournament top scorer Vincent Aboubakar to continue his fine form and add to his five goals from three games. The 30-year-old who currently plays for Saudi side Al Nassr can make history by becoming the first Cameroonian to score in four consecutive AFCON games after tying the previous record of three matches set by national hero Samuel Eto'o.

Therefore, unfortunately for everybody's second team Comoros, we don't see them pulling off another upset like they did against Ghana in the group stage. We see Cameroon winning comfortably, Aboubakar on the scoresheet, but we do feel there is room to believe in a Comoros goal at some point during the 90 minutes.
