The new platform could feature Premier League football alongsode a host of other sporting events

Amazon is reportedly planning to develop a dedicated live streaming app specifically geared towards sports. It is believed that this new OTT platform would feature live sporting events, as well as other sports-based content.

Present on the app would likely be live coverage of the Premier League, to which Amazon holds limited rights, as well as several other high profile sporting properties like Ligue 1 football, NFL football, Formula One motor racing and various baseball and cricket competitions.

CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy, recently referred to live sports as a "unique asset" to the e-commerce giant, and one that the company continues to invest signifcant sums of money in.

As well as several Premier League matches of the season and 8 Ligue 1 games per gameweek, Amazon already holds the exclusive rights to NFL Thursday Night Football, as well as some rights to New York Yankees baseball. The conglomerate is expected to invest in more live sports rights in the coming years.

It is as yet unclear how this new live sports streaming app would function in terms of subscription and price. It remains open to speculation whether or not this new platform would be included in a customer's existing Prime Video membership or exist as a separate entity requiring its own subscription - only time will tell.

Despite cutting staff elsewhere in the company, Amazon remains committed to investing in Prime Video and in live sports rights in particular.

Reports suggest Amazon is serious about its plans to launch a live sports streaming service but nothing has yet been confirmed as far as whether or not the plan will ever come to fruition, and if/when fans can expect to be able to download this new streaming app.

The e-commerce giant does seem committed to capitalising on the everlasting growth in popularity of live football and live sports around the globe. Expect Amazon to continue to make waves in the sports rights space in the coming years.
