Live streams of US networks FOX and FS1 inaccessible on live streaming platform during semi final

American streaming platform FuboTV has blamed disruption of its World Cup coverage on a cyber attack. Some subscribers had difficulty logging into their accounts during last week's World Cup semi final between France and Morocco, with the platform now stating that these technical difficulties were caused by a cyber attack.

The game was being aired on traditional TV networks FOX and FS1, which are available to watch via live streaming on the FuboTV platform. FOX doesn't have its own streaming platform, meaning FuboTV was one of the only ways to follow the game online.

The streaming service is now up-and-running again as normal, and in the process of conducting an investigation into the reasons behind this supposed attack, as they try to ascertain whether any personal data or other information was stolen during the raid.

Customers speculated online at the time that the platform was unable to cope with the huge demand, but FuboTV has issued a statement indicating their belief that the cause was not a technical problem on their end, but a cyber attack.

In the statement, FuboTV suggested that the disruption was caused by a deliberate cyber attack, and the company has now teamed up with cybersecurity firm Mandiant to launch a full investigation into the matter.

The FuboTV statement read:

‘FuboTV takes this matter very seriously. Once we detected the attack, we immediately took steps to contain the incident and worked to restore service to all of our users as quickly as possible. We deeply regret the disruption caused by this incident in the meantime.'

‘We have reported the incident to law enforcement and have engaged Mandiant, an industry-leading incident response firm, to assist with our continuing investigation and response. Our primary focus currently is on ensuring that the incident is fully contained and that there is no threat of further disruption for any of our customers.'

‘Our investigation is at an early stage, but we are committed to transparency regarding this incident. We will provide an update at an appropriate time when we have more information to share.’

‘The entire FuboTV team is absolutely dedicated to delivering an exceptional experience while protecting customer data. We appreciate the trust our customers have in us and the opportunity to serve them everyday. Although no company can ever be immune from the risk of cyberattacks, we assure you that we are working diligently with our outside cybersecurity experts to take all appropriate steps to remediate this incident and to prevent any similar incident from recurring in the future.’

This isn't the first time that a live streaming platform has encountered issues during a live football match which have angered subscribers, and it won't be the last. Streaming giant DAZN has been in hot water several times with Italian fans over problems with its Serie A live streams.

FuboTV will hope to dispel any rumours that this issue was caused by a lack of technical capability, while also ensuring customers that their personal data has not been lost in this apparent cyber attack.
