The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) returns this weekend

World famous pay-TV broadcaster TSN (The Sports Network) has successfully won the rights to broadcast the 2023 edition of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in Canada.

The NWSL is the top tier of the United States women's soccer pyramid and features a 12-team league table which culiminates in a three-round playoff format. The top six teams in the table qualify for the playoffs, with the top two automatically qualifying for the semi finals, and the teams placed third to sixth entering in the first round.

Current champions Portland Thorns FC finished 2nd in the table last season, before beating third place San Diego Wave in the semi final after the wave won their first round game and made it to the semis, and eventually defeating fifth place Kansas City Current in the final to secure their third crown.

The 2023 season gets underway this weekend as North Carolina Courage take on Kansas City on Saturday 25th March. The regular season will end on November 11th before the playoff round decides the next winner.

Matches from this season's NWSL will be available to watch in Canada on linear television with the TSN channel and online via its live streaming service TSN+.

NWSL Commissioner, Jessica Berman, said of the deal:

“The NWSL is the proud home to a number of Canadian players and providing fans in Canada with as many opportunities as possible to watch those players compete was a priority for us this offseason,”

“We’re proud to partner with TSN to make that goal a reality as we continue expanding coverage opportunities for our growing audiences around the world.”

The agreement between TSN and the NWSL further bolsters the network's sports coverage, adding to a portfolio which already includes the rights to the Spanish top flight La Liga and PGA Tour golf.

This is just the latest in a string of high profile domestic and international broadcasting rights deals in the world of women's soccer, as stakeholders continue their push to grow the sport.
