Alejandro Garnacho has been United’s biggest shiny light at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United midfielder, Juan Mata, recently expressed his admiration for the significant progress made by young star Alejandro Garnacho. In an interview promoting a summer friendly against Real Betis, Mata shared his insights on the rising talent and how he is not surprised by Garnacho's rapid development.

Garnacho was just a promising youth talent when Mata left Manchester United at the end of the 2021/22 season. At that time, he had only made two first-team appearances for the club. However, since then, he has established himself as an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s team and is now nearing a century of games for The Red Devils.

This season alone, only Andre Onana has played more matches than him for United. His importance to Ten Hag’s side continues to grow with each passing game.

Mata already saw big future in Garnacho during his time

Mata stated that these signs of potential were evident two years ago when he was still part of Manchester United. Currently without a club after leaving Japanese club Vissel Kobe earlier this year, Mata remains keenly interested in developments at his former club.

Former Manchester United midfielder, Juan Mata, said:

“[I’m] very [impressed]. I mean, I knew Alejandro, I know what he's capable of. He was already showing signs of how good he could be. I think this season he made a step forward. He's more consistent. He's performing at a very high level, almost week in, week out, scoring incredible goals. I'm very happy for him, for his family too. He deserves it.”

Kobbie Mainoo has joined the list of rising stars

Garnacho isn't the only teenager making waves in Ten Hag’s team this season. Despite making his first Premier League start as late as November last year, Kobbie Mainoo has been selected from kick-off in all subsequent 18 Premier League games.

His consistent performances have put him firmly on England manager Gareth Southgate's radar ahead of squad selection this summer.

Juan Mata added:

“I'm really impressed with Kobbie. Of course I haven't seen much of him before, but he looks like he's been playing for the club for longer than [he has]. [In his] first games for United he already looks so mature. He looks like a player. With the ball, without the ball [he’s] focused. [He’s got a] bright future ahead."

The rise and progression of young talents like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo are testament to Erik ten Hag’s faith in youth players at Manchester United. As these youngsters continue to impress both domestically and internationally with their performances on field, they represent hope for future success at Old Trafford.

Juan Mata's endorsement of Garnacho's talent and progression is a testament to the young player's hard work, dedication, and potential. As these rising stars continue to shine, fans can look forward to an exciting future for Manchester United
