Fans can now recreate iconic moments by stepping into their favourite player’s shoes

The Premier League has announced a four-year partnership with sports technology firm Rezzil, marking a significant step forward in the integration of virtual reality (VR) into mainstream sports. The collaboration aims to create an official VR video game that will leverage official Premier League data, offering fans an immersive digital experience.

Slated for release later in 2024, the upcoming VR game will allow fans to step into the shoes of their favorite players and recreate iconic goals and historic moments. This innovative approach is set to revolutionize fan engagement by providing a unique interactive platform where supporters can experience first-hand the thrill and excitement of being part of their favorite team's history.

Premier League also bought stake in Rezzil

In addition to this groundbreaking partnership, the Premier League will also acquire an equity stake in Manchester-based firm Rezzil. Recognized as one of SportsPro’s sports technology ideas worth investing in 2020, Rezzil specializes in athlete training, match analysis, and fitness-based VR software.

Will Brass, Premier League’s chief commercial officer, said:

“We are excited about the ongoing development of VR technology within football, Rezzil are highly respected in the field and have developed an excellent reputation with training products that are being used by many Premier League clubs alongside leading sports teams and leagues around the world.

“The applications for this technology are expanding quickly and this partnership will see the Premier League working with Rezzil on products that can help redefine player, fan and viewer experiences.”

Andy Etches, Rezzil co-founder, said:

“We are thrilled to embark on this new partnership with the Premier League, By combining our expertise in VR technology with the unparalleled excitement of Premier League football, we are looking forward to supporting the Premier League’s fan and player engagement ambitions. Working hand in hand together, we’re poised to bring VR technology to football in ways never seen before.”

Many Premier League clubs already on-board

Rezzil already boasts partnerships with several Premier League clubs including Manchester City and Wolves. Its products are widely used by individual athletes and clubs alike to enhance performance through advanced training sessions and match analytics. The company develops products compatible with popularly available VR headsets such as Meta Quest and PlayStation VR. It also caters to more professional platforms that use sensors and haptic feedback technology for a realistic feel akin to kicking a real ball.

Rezzil’s software offers comprehensive training sessions replicating entire stadium experiences - crowd noise included - allowing players to compete against real-life adversaries virtually.

While video games are an obvious application for this technology, its potential extends far beyond gaming alone. There is growing recognition within industry circles that this technology can serve as a powerful fan engagement tool. Broadcasters can leverage the software to enhance their coverage, offering viewers a more immersive and engaging viewing experience.

The Premier League's investment in Rezzil ahead of the official VR game launch signals a new era for sports technology. By harnessing VR's potential, they are not only enhancing athletic performance but also revolutionizing fan engagement. As we look forward to the game’s release later this year, it is clear that this partnership will set a precedent for future collaborations between sports leagues and tech firms.
