The german company will be the ball supplier for competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations

In a significant development for African football, German sportswear and equipment brand Puma has secured a deal to supply the official match ball for tournaments organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

This new partnership, which commences in November, will see Puma play a pivotal role in several major tournaments, including the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Puma's new role as technical partner

Under the new agreement, Puma will serve as the technical partner of CAF, a role that extends beyond providing the official match ball. The brand will also be responsible for supplying the kit for referees during the tournaments.

This partnership will cover several tournaments, the most notable of which is the 2023 AFCON, set to take place in the Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

The 2023 AFCON was initially slated for this year but was rescheduled to 2024 due to concerns over the rainy season in the Ivory Coast. This decision was made to ensure the safety and optimal performance of the players, as well as the smooth running of the tournament.

Johan Kuhlo, general manager of Europe, Middle East, and Africa distribution at Puma, said:

“The passion for football runs deep in Africa and PUMA has taken a unique and creative approach in its partnerships with its African teams over the years.

“Our agreement with CAF celebrates this passion for the sport across the continent and we will jointly develop exciting products specifically for African football.”

Puma's marketing rights

In addition to its technical responsibilities, Puma will also hold marketing rights inside and outside host venues. This means that the brand will have a significant presence during these tournaments, both on the field and in promotional activities. This is a significant opportunity for Puma to further establish its brand within the African football scene.

Puma's new role as the official match ball supplier for CAF tournaments marks a change from previous years. The brand succeeds Umbro, which acted as the match ball supplier at the 2019 and 2021 editions of the AFCON. This transition is a testament to Puma's growing influence in the global sports equipment market.

This new partnership between Puma and CAF is a significant development for African football. With Puma's reputation for quality sportswear and equipment, fans and players alike can look forward to an enhanced experience in the upcoming tournaments.

As the official match ball supplier and technical partner, Puma is set to leave a significant mark on the African football scene.
