The Reds are looking to tighten up their screws in midfield

Liverpool Football Club has reportedly initiated contact with Boca Juniors Ezequiel Fernandez, following a glowing recommendation from Alexis Mac Allister.

Mac Allister, who spent a significant part of the 2019-20 season at Boca Juniors on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, spoke highly of Fernandez and recommended him to Jurgen Klopp. The Argentine outlets report that this recommendation led to Liverpool's interest in the young midfielder.

Ezequiel Fernandez has been with Boca Juniors for his entire professional career so far. He is primarily a defensive midfielder – a position that Mac Allister currently fills at Liverpool after Fabinho's transfer to the Saudi Pro League last summer.

Fernandez could be Liverpool's final piece in the midfield puzzle

Fernandez has made 47 senior appearances for his club and provided two assists. His contract at La Bombonera doesn't expire until December 2025, indicating his potential long-term commitment to the club.

The arrival of Fernandez could free up Mac Allister and allow him to play in a more advanced role. Currently, Liverpool is managing with Mac Allister in the No.6 position, backed up by Wataru Endo.

Last summer saw unsuccessful attempts by the club to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia as reinforcements for this position; both players ended up heading to Chelsea squad. Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara often served as backups for Fabinho before Henderson joined Ajax this month after leaving Liverpool last summer for Al-Ettifaq.

Liverpool are eyeing Fernandez as Thiago’s replacement

Thiago’s persistent injury issues are well known at this point which further emphasizes the need for strengthening their midfield line-up.

If successful, this potential transfer could be a win-win situation for both Liverpool and Fernandez. The young Argentine would get the opportunity to play in one of the world's most prestigious leagues, while it could strengthen Liverpool midfield with a promising talent.

However, as with all transfers, it remains to be seen whether this initial contact will lead to an actual move. For now, sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike will be watching closely as events unfold.
